Célio Roberto nasceu na cidade de Pedra, Pernambuco, mas hoje mora no povoado de Guanumbi, município de Buíque-PE, a 290 km da capital Recife. Célio se descobriu artista aproveitando os restos de barro de uma olaria fundada por seu pai quando ele ainda tinha oito anos de idade. O que começou como uma simples brincadeira, acabou revelando o talento que possibilitou transformar essa brincadeira em ofício. Esse talento foi revelado, sobretudo, através da capacidade que tinha Célio de fazer caricaturas de moradores da região. A caricatura de um senhor chamado “Zé de Lixandre” foi a primeira delas; foi a peça que abriu caminho para tantas outras que viriam a posteriori. Hoje, depois de ter aperfeiçoado suas habilidades com o barro, impressiona a todos pelo seu perfeccionismo nas feições e no detalhe característico de cada uma das pessoas que retrata. Tornou-se um retratista do barro.

Célio divide seu
tempo entre a criação de gado e a sua arte. É fiel aos métodos tradicionais de manejo
com barro; sem qualquer mecanização, apenas a enxada, as mãos e umas poucas
ferramentas improvisadas. Ele próprio é o responsável pela extração e pelo preparo
do barro dentro de uma pequena propriedade rural que possui. Com o talento nato
e o aperfeiçoamento de suas habilidades ao longo dos anos vem retratando
figuras conhecidas do mundo da arte, da política e algumas personalidades, como Dominguinhos, Patativa do Assaré, Luiz Gonzaga, Lampião, Ariano Suassuna e o presidente Lula,
que recebeu uma imagem sua quando visitou a cidade de Buíque.
